Move with Pets
Learn about your new area
You should make a research on your new area so as to find out if
there are any special costs, quarantine or special documents that
you are supposed to be aware of before you move. You should also
find a veterinarian and ask if there are any local health concerns
such as worms or deceases or any vaccination or medication that your
pet will require. Also you should be aware of any unique laws for
example if there are any restrictions to some breeds of pets.
Plan and start early
Proper planning should be carried out in order for you to see the
best and most comfortable method you can use to move with your pets.
You should also start early so as to be in a position to look for
your pet if they are allowed to go outside and also gives you ample
time to get your pet used to the ride.
Keep food and medication on hand
You should keep at least one week’s worth of food and medication
with you in case of an emergency. Vets can write prescriptions and
you should get a refill before you move. Special therapeutic foods
should also be purchased in case you won’t be able to find food
right away in your new area.
Update the identification tag
You should make sure that your pet is wearing a collar with an
identification tag which is labeled with your current contact
information. The identification tag should include your destination
and telephone number that would reach you in case you are separated
from your pet.
Ask for veterinary records
If you are moving far away, you will definitely need a new vet and
so you should ask a current copy of your pet’s vaccination records
and medical history. Depending on the place you are moving to, your
pet may require additional medication, vaccinations and health
certificates which can be acquired from your current vet’s records.
Seclude your pet from chaos
Some pets can feel vulnerable during the move hence it is important
to keep them in a safe, quiet and well ventilated place. If you are
intending to move your pet in a crate, you should introduce it to
the pet gradually before your trip. Make sure that the crate is well
ventilated and secure so that the nervous pet cannot escape. A label
should be placed on the crate indicating that there is a pet inside
that should not be disturbed.
Prepare a new home for the pet
On arrival at your destination, pets can be confused in the new
surroundings. You should immediately set out the entire familiar and
necessary things that you pet will need for example food, water,
medication, litter box and toys that may reduce the anxiety of the
pet. You should keep your pet locked inside for some time to prevent
chances of the pet from straying outside in an attempt to go back to
your original home.
